March basketball in Indiana always brings the drama, and the opening round of sectional play delivered exactly that as the young guns from South Central squared off with SAC rival New Washington in a thriller that had fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.
When it was all said and done, the Rebels escaped with a heart-pounding 69–68 victory, punching their ticket to the next round and keeping their postseason hopes alive.
Right in the middle of the action was Lucas Hobbs, a player many around Southern Indiana believe has one of the purest shooting strokes in the region.
Hobbs has quietly become one of the most reliable scorers around. Just ask anyone who watched him last spring and summer. In an almost unbelievable stat, Hobbs missed one single free throw during that stretch and finished the season shooting a jaw-dropping 97% from the foul line, the best mark in the entire program.
Yes… 97%. Let that sink in.
In the sectional opener, Hobbs showed exactly why defenders lose sleep preparing for him. The sharpshooter poured in 23 points, knocking down shots from all over the floor and providing the offensive spark the Rebels needed in the back-and-forth battle.
Whether it was pulling up from deep, attacking space, or calmly stepping to the line, Hobbs delivered when the moment demanded it most. Simply put—the kid is a walking bucket.
Now the road only gets tougher.
Hobbs and the Rebels will turn their attention to another familiar foe as they prepare to face SAC rival Borden on Friday night in what promises to be another electric sectional showdown. Rivalries, packed gyms, and survive-and-advance basketball—this is exactly what makes Indiana’s tournament season special.
If Hobbs stays hot, don’t be surprised if the Rebels keep dancing a little longer.
And if you’re a fan of great shooting…you might want to make sure you’re in the gym when Lucas Hobbs lets it fly.
